Over the last 15 years we
have imported and distributed hundreds of tons of fishnets / gillnets for
the commercial fishing industry. Each coastal fishing boat that fish with
gillnets, use 200-500 nets each year. When a fish net reach the end of its
life, the float line and lead line is recuperated and the netting is
replaced. Fishermen send the new nets with the old cords to workshops that
mount for them, or they have family members that mount nets for the boat.
A skilled fishnet technician can mount a net in 3-5 hours, meaning that a
small coastal boat employ one full position just to mount the nets. Gillnetting are a selective fishing method. The mesh size fits to the head of the fish, and when the head is in the mesh, its gill flaps prevent it for getting back out. Bigger fish and smaller fish not target in a specific net will not be caught. Gillnets are normally set in the afternoon and hauled in the morning. The fish is alive or very fresh when hauled.
