Long line is a single horizontal mainline branched with hooked lines. Its construction depends on where the fish to be caught can be found. There are many types and styles, that may be put into four categories: - Surface long line, aimed to catch shark and large pelagic species. The main line is normally 2.5 - 3.5mm twisted line of PE / PP mixture, or monofilament, and the distance between the hook lines may be 15 to 30 meter (50-100ft) A 30 meter long liner with 100 ton freezer and 40 days autonomy would operate a 100 kilometer (60 miles) line with 5,000 hooks. Surface long lining can also be performed by smaller boats from 20ft. on day fishing, operating 100 to 1,000 hooks. The bait is usually whole pelagic fish with firm flesh such as mackerels, but artificial lures such as octopus are used with sucess. - Mid water line, aimed to catch medium to large species such as croakers and basses have a main line of 1.5 - 2.5mm nylon monofilament with 4 to 10 meter (12-30ft) distance between the hooks, The bait is normally artificial lures. While the surface long line is drifting, the mid-water line is stationary with both anchors and floats. - Bottom long line, aimed to catch demersal species. The size of fish may be 1-3 kg or 2-6lbs (snappers, breams, bass etc) and the line is accordingly thinner, normally 1.2 mm to 1.4mm main mono line and 0.60mm - 0.90mm hook lines. The bait is normally pieces of fish, but again, bass and bream go for artifical lures as well. - Auto lines, created for mechanized fishing after cod, where the mainline is made of 4-8mm twisted mixture rope and the short snoods are made of the same material. This long line is laid straight on the sea bed since fishing grounds for cod fish is normally rocky. When the line is stretched, most of the hooks would be free from the bottom. The bait is fish, applied to the hooks by a baiting machine.
